GBIFDA National Misfuel Register
The compliance system for documenting misfuel remediation and contaminated fuel disposal in Great Britain.
Certified workshops register on the National Misfuel Register, file each disposal event, and receive a Certificate of Compliance — the formal record insurers, petrol stations, and regulators expect when asking whether hazardous waste was handled lawfully.
Why recording matters under UK law
Contaminated fuel removed during misfuel remediation is normally hazardous waste. UK law requires you to prove the chain of custody from generation to licensed disposal:
- Environmental Protection Act 1990 — duty of care on waste producers
- Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005 — consignment notes for hazardous waste movements
- Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 — workplace handling and safety records
- Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009 — transport of contaminated fuel as dangerous goods
Without documented disposal records, a workshop has no independent proof of compliant handling — a problem if HSE inspects, an insurer assesses a claim, or a petrol station needs to show due diligence.
What the register provides
Per disposal event
- Workshop files the remediation job (vehicle, volumes, method, disposal route)
- Register records the event against the certified operator
- Certificate of Compliance is issued automatically
- Records retained for audit (GBIFDA recommends 7 years; statutory minimum for consignment notes is 3 years)
Who should register
- Certified workshops performing misfuel remediation at fixed facilities
- Compliant operators managing networks of certified workshops
- Workshops operating under an operator umbrella (e.g. EEK Mechanical network) with per-job filing
Registration is separate from displaying the GBIFDA Mark — certification verifies your operation; the register proves each disposal was documented.
